Tycho Brahe began
operating the Paper Mill on Hven around 1580. A series of some 60
ponds of varying size, like pearls on a string running down towards
the Millbrook, were created to drive the mill's large water wheel.
For its time, this was a gigantic piece of engineering which radically
changed the island's geography.
About 1572, Tycho had built
what was probably Scandinavia's first paper mill at Knutstorp. (
This mill later became Klippan Paper Ltd. )
Tycho developed the Hven Mill's
technology to cover three functions - paper production, the processing
of hides for leather production and the milling of flour. The Mill
was used until 1602 when it was torn down, along with Tycho's other
buildings on the island.
Today, 1 metre
high cement poles commemorate the place where the Mill stood. The
pictures show the Mill from different angles and the path down to
the Mill when you come from the Hollander Way or from Nämndemansgården
(the Councillor's Estate).
The Mill lay out toward the sea behind the embankment on
the right of the picture underneath..
